About Bethany House in Preston, Lancashire

Bethany House is a purpose-built 26-bed residential care home just outside Preston, Lancashire.

We offer residential care for older people, including for those who are living with dementia. We can provide respite care to those who need it and we are able to offer care at the end of life.

All our bedrooms are situated on the ground floor and include a single bed, an easy chair, an over-table, drawers and a wardrobe. We have 13 en-suite rooms which include a toilet. Bedrooms are centrally heated to a comfortable temperature, which residents (or "family members" as we call those who live with us) can control themselves, and each room has a lockable drawer that may be used for valuables, small amounts of cash and medication. Family members can bring in their own belongings, including small furniture, to personalise their room. A 24-hour call system installed in each room ensures assistance can be called for at all times.

There are two comfortable lounges. The large lounge has an adjacent dining room and the smaller one is well suited as a quiet room or for meeting visitors over a cup of tea or coffee from the drink station. Both lounges overlook the gardens. In summer, family members can use the garden seats to enjoy the sunshine.

A computer tablet is available to keep in touch with family and friends. We have free Wi-Fi throughout the home, so you can use your own laptop, tablet or mobile phone if you prefer. We can help family members with IT and with accessing services such as video calling.

Caring and highly trained staff

We are proud of our dedicated and well-trained team, some of who have worked at Bethany House for many years. A professional attitude is maintained at all times, ensuring courtesy, respect and kindness towards each resident, or 'family member' as we call those who choose to live with us.

We have a staff team of 39 at present and 22 of our staff team have an NVQ2 or above.

We also have two manual handling co-ordinators who have been trained to RoSPA level 3. They in turn trained the care team to RoSPA level 2.

We have two care managers and eight senior carers who run each shift, order and administer prescribed medication including controlled drugs, write and update care plans, liaise with GPs and district nurses, and communicate with the next of kin regarding the care and well-being of those who live here. The senior team are supported by care assistance and bank carers. We have four carers on the early shift, two carers on the late shift, and two carers on the overnight shift.

We also have a social activity co-ordinator and a cook supervisor and cook along with a housekeeping team.

The team always ensure that the home is kept clean and well presented and that those who live with us have a well-laundered wardrobe.

A continuous staff training programme is implemented to ensure that high standards are maintained in line with the latest initiatives and developments in care practices.

Daily life at Bethany House

Our activities team arrange a varied programme, which may include music, films, pampering, crafts, board games, exercise etc. We welcome visitors for events such as piano recitals, music, drama entertainment and clothing parties. Special events are also organised to celebrate seasonal or national occasions. Regular meetings encourage feedback and suggestions about activities provided.

We often have a visiting scheme with a local nursery, where children come and undertake craft activities and games with those who live here. Both age groups seem to enjoy and benefit from his shared time.

Trips out are arranged, especially during the summer months, to various places of interest. Local shops are within a short distance for active family members to walk to and we have a dedicated hairdresser who visits once a week.

Everyone is welcome to participate in regular Christian devotions, undertaken by visiting speakers or friends of Bethany House. Communion is available weekly and you may ask your own minister to visit and receive communion privately if you prefer. Our pastoral team arranges groups and meetings with a variety of activities, which can include prayer, singing, Bible study, discussion and spiritual reflection. There are also visits from churches, local schools and student groups from time to time, such as at Christmas, Easter and Harvest.

Meals are home-made which are freshly cooked by our catering team, using high-quality produce and refreshments are served throughout the day. We provide low-sugar foods for people with diabetes. Please ask us about other dietary needs, food allergies and personal preferences. Meals are served in the dining room in a relaxed environment. We can also serve your meal in your room or arrange for you to have your meal at a different time to fit in with your day's appointments and activities.
