Meet a senior night carer...Abraham
Tyler Sewell-Nicholas
Originally from India, Abraham, 57, has been a devoted member of the care team at Milward House, Tunbridge Wells, for over 15 years. We explore his journey into caregiving and why the role turned out to be a positive influence in his life

Before I settled in the UK in 2004, I worked as a mechanical draftsman in Saudi Arabia. Although I had a promising career, moving here presented new challenges. It wasn’t easy to find work in my field, so I made the leap into caregiving—a decision I never anticipated would be so rewarding. It has transformed my life in ways I never expected.
I’ve witnessed a few transitions of the home over the years, but the high level of care remains the same. Milward House is more than just a care home; it’s a sanctuary where our ‘family members’ (those who live with us) are cherished like dear friends.
Working here means I am part of one big family. The unique and nurturing environment that the staff and family members have created in the home is what has kept me here all these years. I am extremely grateful.
One of the most fulfilling aspects of my job is the deep connections I form with our family members. Witnessing their smiles and knowing that I play a role in their happiness is incredibly rewarding. I especially enjoy spending time with those who require a bit more assistance i.e. those with dementia. Each interaction feels like a gift, and it’s a privilege to care for them and share in their lives.
Adjusting to night shifts was a challenge at first. My body clock took time to adapt, but over the years, I’ve developed a rhythm that works for me. Resting properly during the day and maintaining a structured routine helps me stay alert and focused throughout my shifts.
Night carers maintain a safe and supportive environment for our family members while many people are asleep. My day starts with a handover from the day team, then I check on all those who live with us to ensure they're settled for the night. Some of our family members need assistance with personal care, while others, especially those with dementia, require reassurance throughout the night.

I find immense joy in my responsibilities as a night carer. I approach my role with the mindset that I’m caring for my own relatives. Whether it’s sharing stories or offering a reassuring hand, I strive to create a warm environment for our family members.
"I find immense joy in my responsibilities as a night carer"

My job can sometimes be quite intense. I vividly recall a night when a family member collapsed suddenly. Staying calm and acting quickly was crucial. I called for help and began CPR. Those moments are both terrifying and profound, reminding me of the importance of being vigilant and prepared within my role.
Working at Milward House has changed my perspective on the care sector. Our teamwork is extraordinary; when someone faces difficulties, we lift each other up, creating a strong support system. This collective spirit fosters a sense of belonging and camaraderie.
Outside of work, I treasure my time with wife and children. Family is everything to me. Growing up in an Anglican household in India, I attended Sunday school with my family, where I learnt about Christian values. My father, a dedicated farmer, still manages our family’s five acres of land, which includes rubber trees, coconut, and black pepper.
For anyone considering a career as a night carer, I urge you to embrace the responsibility with a genuine heart. Our family members depend on us, and we must be ready to meet their needs with empathy and kindness. It’s essential to approach this role as a chance to make a real difference in someone’s life.
