Meet a volunteer...Diane
Tyler Sewell-Nicholas
Diane is a passionate volunteer at Evington Home, whose 15-year journey of service has been strengthened by faith, personal loss, and meaningful connections
Volunteering at Evington Home has been a cornerstone of my life. I began this journey in the 1960s, when my father would share messages during Sunday evening services, and my sisters and I would sing and play guitar. Back then, the wards were filled with beds, but what I remember most is the laughter and warmth we shared—whether it was serving tea or simply chatting with everyone, the connections we made filled the room with so much joy.
Fast forward to today, I have been actively volunteering for the last 12 to 15 years. My personal experience with my mother, who had dementia, deepened my understanding of the challenges faced by those who we call ‘family members’. Despite the cognitive decline, she remained spiritually connected to the Lord, teaching me so much about the resilience of the human spirit.
After my mother passed away, I felt a calling to nourish and support elderly individuals. Seeking guidance from the Lord on how best to serve others, I was led to Evington Home, where I quickly recognised an opportunity to bring in my craft supplies and help encourage more meaningful connections among the residents and their families.
About 12 years ago, an activity coordinator was appointed at Evington Home, and I felt my prayers had been answered. I began working closely with her, helping with devotions, activities, crafts, and outings, even tending to the garden. Today I work alongside the Activities and Community Engagement (ACE) Facilitator, Barbara. Getting to know her, the rest of the staff and family members has been such a privilege, every moment spent with them is a blessing.
One of the most remarkable experiences has been forming connections with the family members. I became really close with a lady named Barbara who had spent her life as a missionary in Kenya. She was invited to attend a Maundy Thursday service in 2018 at Leicester Cathedral where Queen Elizabeth II distributed ceremonial coins to 92 people. Standing outside the cathedral, I watched as the Queen and Prince Phillip walked past, capturing a picture of Barbara next to the Queen on the big screen. Her family was overjoyed to see the photo, and I couldn't help but think how wonderful it was—almost as if this was God’s way of rewarding Barbara for her lifelong service.
During the pandemic, I arranged to Skype into the home weekly. It was important to remain present in the lives of the family members, even when I couldn’t be there physically, sharing devotions and maintaining those precious connections.
My heart for helping others has led me to a variety of hobbies. For nearly two decades, I’ve dedicated a few months each year to working with children during their holidays, leading crafts, activities, and offering support in any way I can. One of my most treasured experiences was volunteering at a Christian children’s home in Kenya. It was a truly transformative and unforgettable chapter in my journey.
Being a volunteer is a journey filled with surprises and meaningful moments. I’ve been blessed to pray with friends, celebrate special milestones, and witness firsthand the powerful impact of simple acts of kindness. I’m excited to continue this work, building lasting relationships and sharing love and compassion with everyone I meet along the way.
I encourage anyone considering volunteering to reach out and learn more. There are monthly volunteer meetings, where you can meet like-minded individuals, and find your own way to contribute. If you’re feeling unsure, pairing up with an experienced volunteer can make the journey feel easier and more fulfilling. It's a beautiful experience that invites you to connect with others meaningfully.
