I never imagined I'd end up here, but life has a way of leading us to where we’re meant to be. My journey started in a very different place. I spent 11 years as a nun and in 1994 I made the decision to leave the convent and convert to Christianity. It’s been 30 years since that turning point, and now my life is dedicated to volunteering, bringing love and care to those who need it most.

I love connecting with others, and that’s what draws me to this work. Volunteering at Evington Home is truly fulfilling. Our 'family members' (those who live with us), just want someone to sit with them, talk, or even just listen. It might seem like a small thing, but it means the world to them. For me, it’s not just about offering support; it’s about building relationships and making sure each person feels valued.

I’ve always been a people person. One of my favourite parts of volunteering is simply making a cup of tea for someone and sitting down with them for a chat. There's something so comforting about those moments. I also love the challenge of being there on their tough days, offering comfort when they feel confused or troubled. Sometimes, all it takes is a kind word or just being present to make a difference.

My path to volunteering was unexpected. As a nun, I thought my life would be one of service, but it wasn't until I left that I really found what that meant for me. I was seeking something more when I was in the convent, thinking I would serve God there. But over time, I realised it wasn’t the right place for me. I was seeking truth, and that search eventually led me to where I am today—working with people in a way that brings me so much joy and purpose.

Volunteering at Evington Home feels like being part of a big family. Every day brings something new, and every person I meet teaches me something. It’s a lovely role, and I encourage anyone considering volunteering to give it a try. You’ll get so much out of it. You don’t need special skills—just a heart for people and a willingness to care.

What I love most about volunteering is how happy it makes everyone, including the other volunteers. I see how much joy they get from my sitting with them, praying with them, or just being there for them. It’s amazing to watch, and it fills me with gratitude to be a part of it all.

If you’re thinking about volunteering, I say please come. You’ll love it, and it will change you in ways you can’t imagine. For me, it’s been a wonderful journey, one that continues to bring me closer to the people around me, and closer to a sense of purpose I’ve been searching for all my life.
