Raisin' spirits
Tyler Sewell-Nicholas
Milward House in Tunbridge Wells have been getting into the Easter spirit with a heartwarming rendition of traditional nursery rhyme Hot Cross Buns
The familiar melody filled the home as those who live with us gathered to sing, their voices carrying echoes of childhood memories and the anticipation of Easter joy. For many, Hot Cross Buns is a lovely reminder of springtime, renewal, and Jesus Christ’s resurrection.
The singing activity was organised by Activities and Community Engagement (ACE) Facilitator Susan who had printed off song words specially. ‘Family members’ (those who live with us) sang and clapped along to the familiar tune. To make things even more special, they were each holding a freshly baked hot cross bun, ready to be enjoyed after the performance.
The hot cross bun carries rich symbolism. Rachel, a family member, at Milward House, explains: “The cross is to signify the death of the Lord Jesus, the fruit represents the body of Christ in the tomb, and the spices—cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves—symbolise those used to anoint Him after His death. Even the risen yeast dough can be seen as a symbol of Jesus’ resurrection.”
Another family member shared a cherished childhood memory of the sweet treat: “I was about five, and my mum used to make big hot cross buns, as big as my hands. My parents, my siblings, and I would sit together, cutting them into pieces because we were a big family. We’d spread lots of butter on them while they were still warm.”
Sounds delicious!
