Sponsored walk for Framland

Many thanks to the Wantage Auxiliary Committee who have raised much-valued funds in support of our home in Wantage

Gaily-painted barges and a family of swans were some of the sights to greet walkers as they embarked on a 5 ½ mile sponsored walk in aid of Framland, our home in Wantage. The walk took place earlier this autumn in the scenic surroundings of the Cotswolds and followed a circular route, taking in a stretch of the Thames Path including Buscot Weir and Lock – the smallest of the 45 locks on the River Thames.The group was made up of 11 walkers from six different local churches. Many of the group are long-term supporters of Pilgrims’ Friend Society and several have close links to Framland – two have had relatives living at Framland, one is a retired member of staff and one is a Home Visitor.

Dave Pepler, Publicity Secretary of the Wantage Auxiliary Committee, said, “While some activities have not been possible this year, it was lovely that the sponsored walk, generally our biggest fundraiser, could go ahead. Being outdoors, our party could maintain social distance while enjoying fellowship. It felt like a bit of normality in a strange world.”

According to Dave, the walkers enjoyed ‘Goldilocks’ weather conditions – not too hot, not too cold, and ideal for walking. Once the route was completed, the walkers sat down for a picnic lunch overlooking Buscot Lock and enjoyed watching the boats go by.

The walk raised a total of £1,015 for Framland’s Voluntary Support Fund. The funds will go towards the purchase of some more oak fire doors to improve the sightlines in the corridors at Framland.

Beth Kneale, Care Manager at Framland, said, “We are so grateful to the Committee for all they do to support our home. While our supporters may not be able to visit as usual, it’s lovely to know that they are continuing to support us through activities such as this and their on-going prayers.”
