Threaded with love

Evington Home in Leicester recently hosted a paper bead making activity filled with laughter, conversation, and creativity. It was an opportunity for those who live with us to engage in a traditional craft while enjoying time together as a community
Paper bead making is a craft that transforms strips of paper into decorative beads, which can be used for jewellery, ornaments, and small toys. The process involves cutting colourful paper into triangular or rectangular strips, rolling them tightly around a toothpick, and sealing them with varnish or glue for durability. As well as being creative and enjoyable, this activity promotes recycling, making it environmentally friendly, too.
Barbara, our Activities and Community Engagement (ACE) Facilitator at Evington Home, decided on this activity to help foster connection and community among ‘family members’ (as we call those who live with us) and staff. She said, “It’s always a joy when everyone comes together for activities. It helps us get to know one another better and everyone enjoys showcasing their unique creations.”
Beyond the artistic benefits, Barbara also wanted to provide a valuable opportunity for physical engagement, particularly for those with dementia. The process of rolling and shaping the beads requires precise finger movements, which can help improve hand-eye coordination and fine motor control. These repetitive motions act as a form of exercise, stimulating circulation in the hands and fingers. One of our family members, Margaret, expressed her enthusiasm, noting that the craft is excellent for her hand coordination.
Family members embraced the idea of gifting their handmade beads to one another, reinforcing the home’s spirit of care and generosity.
For some, the true enjoyment came from the process rather than the outcome. Maureen, who took part in the activity, said, “I wouldn’t wear the beads as a necklace—the real fun is in the crafting.”
