10 ways we support people spiritually
Tyler Sewell-Nicholas
At Pilgrims' Friend Society, we believe that spiritual care is just as vital as physical care for those living in our homes. As a Christian organisation, we integrate faith into all aspects of life, ensuring those in our care feel encouraged, supported, and connected in their spiritual journeys. Here are 10 ways we support people spiritually in our care homes:
1. Daily devotions
We make daily devotions an essential part of life in all our homes which includes, Bible readings, prayers, hymns, and testimonies that help ground our ‘family members’ (those who live with us) in their faith. They are encouraged to actively participate by reading scripture aloud, leading prayers, or offering musical contributions. This creates an inclusive and welcoming environment where everyone can engage with the Word of God, fostering a sense of community and shared devotion.
2. Access to biblical resources
As a Christian organisation, we ensure that the Bible is central to the spiritual life of our family members. Whether in daily devotions or through individual reading, the Bible provides comfort, guidance, and hope to those that live with us. We also have several books and resources in every home designed to keep family members engaged with their faith and help them grow spiritually. These materials encourage deeper reflections into God's Word.
3. Church connections
We believe in fostering connections with local churches to support the spiritual lives of our family members. Regular visits from church leaders, participation in church services, and community events provide an opportunity for family members to maintain their church involvement and continue their Christian journey in familiar surroundings.
4. Volunteer support
Volunteers play a key role in enhancing the spiritual life within our homes. Many volunteers contribute by leading Bible studies, prayer groups, or simply offering a listening ear. Their presence and support ensure that our family members are not only cared for physically but spiritually uplifted as well. We believe that volunteering is a rewarding way to serve others and deepen one’s own faith.
5. Community
We believe in the power of community to nurture spiritual well-being. Our care homes are designed to create an environment where family members can form lasting friendships with each other based on shared faith and values. These connections provide emotional and spiritual support, as family members encourage one another in their spiritual journeys. Many of our homes also feature beautiful gardens, which serve as tranquil spaces for reflection, conversation and opportunities to connect with one another while enjoying God’s creation.
6. The Way We Care
At the heart of Pilgrims' Friend Society is The Way We Care approach, which ensures that care is rooted in Christian values. With a focus on respect, dignity, and compassion, our care philosophy emphasises spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being. It integrates faith into everyday interactions, from how we support family members’ needs to how we share moments of joy and celebration. Our eight foundational principles, such as "Nurturing Hope" and "Supporting Personal Choices," guide us in providing holistic care. For family members with dementia, this means offering tailored support that honours their individual journey and meets their spiritual needs with patience and love.
7. Supportive managers
It is important for us that our care home managers are all Christian, bringing both professional expertise and spiritual guidance to their roles. They not only lead with care but also offer pastoral support, providing a listening ear and prayerful encouragement when needed. As part of the leadership team, managers ensure that faith is woven throughout our care practices, creating a nurturing environment for both staff and those that live with us.
8. ACE Facilitators
Our Activities and Community Engagement (ACE) Facilitators are a vital part of our spiritual care team. They oversee a variety of activities that cater to the diverse spiritual needs of family members. From Bible studies to prayer groups, ACE Facilitators help create opportunities for personal reflection and communal worship. They also tailor activities to suit individual preferences, ensuring that each person feels spiritually fulfilled and connected.
9. Christian celebrations
Celebrating key Christian festivals such as Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost are an important part of spiritual life in our care homes. These celebrations bring the community together for shared worship, reflection, and fellowship. Family members, staff, and volunteers participate in services, enjoy festive meals, and take part in activities that reflect the joy of the Christian faith, reinforcing the sense of community and spiritual connection.
10. End of life care
We believe in the importance of thoughtful preparation for the end of life, encouraging family members and their loved ones to plan ahead so they can approach this time with peace and readiness. Our staff, trained with professional care skills and Christian compassion, walk alongside families, offering practical assistance and emotional support. Whether through singing favourite hymns to bring peace and comfort or sitting quietly to pray and read the Bible, we ensure no one faces this time alone. For those who feel fearful, we create sacred spaces of reassurance and peace, offering solace during this deeply meaningful time.
Through these ten practices, we strive to make Pilgrims' Friend Society a place of spiritual growth, comfort, and fellowship, so that each family member feels truly cherished and supported on their spiritual journey.
